Sport Psychology- just another branch of psychology?
Sports Psychologist helps athletes to overcome challenges, where coaches, nutritious and trainers can't. Sports psychology exists to assist athletes and teams. Its an extra resource, which contributes to the athletes to perform better.Although improvement in performance is a major component in sports psychology, it is not the only part of sports , sports psychologists has to even concentrate on other factors of sportsmen like their well-being. Other parts consists of dealing with their personal issues that affects the game and shaping the developmental and social impact that sports participation has on athletes.
During my training , I came across few important sections where the psychologists needs to work, to make the player perform their best with a calm state.
Bringing back the player...
I have seen many athletes, who face difficulty to make a comeback from a major injury, trauma or many other reasons. Performing for the first time again after a break, makes the athlete pressurized and there is a feeling of self-doubt, which is consistently running in the mind. The incident might be the greatest thing, but the world only wants performance from the sportsmen and the not their story is to be kept in mind.
Coordination between the team...
The bond, the understanding, the coordination, the communication between the team is the most precise factor which affects the performance of the team. The team has to improve the understanding in between, to achieve the goal which is set by them all and the is no other option for the same. Even one miscommunication would be enough to make the goal distance.
Personal issues and performance...
Apart from the field, the sportsmen is also a common person who has a life similar to others, which consists of family, job,friends, relatives, etc. He/she also has to go through the crisis, it might be financial, health or other. These issues affects the training and that ultimately reflects on the performance. Staying away from the problems and concentrating on the match is the need and which can be possible only when one has the control over his mind.
Great information...... We often think about Physical Fitness and ignore Mental Health in sports ! i agree that sports are 10% physical and 90% mental...... thank you and keep writing !!
